What is Persuasion?

Persuasion is the art of convincing people to change their beliefs, values, attitudes and actions to match your own. People often confuse communication with persuasion. Effective communication means that the right words and emotional tone has been delivered in ways that make people want to change their behaviour. The guiding principle for both communication and persuasion is that people listen to people they like, respect, admire and trust.

 

People often think of "persuasion" as magic, or manipulation, or simply a matter of being lucky. But that's not really what persuasion is. Persuasion is about generating ideas that change people's minds and getting the opportunity to express them. It's about taking action to get what you want. Persuasive techniques

Persuasive words can be said and written but it must be strategised for effectiveness. Here are the few ways you can angle your argument to persuade your audience:

1. Emotional Language 

Words that trigger the emotional chord in your audience and can draw the audience in and make them feel with or for you. For example: "If I don’t work two jobs, I won’t be able to provide 3 meals a day for my family.”

2. Referring to Important People

The big names strategy involves using the names of experts or well-known people who support your position. For example: "Dad agrees that increasing my allowance will..."

3. Research

It is always better to be prepared and have data or numbers to justify your proposal. People can see it more clearly if you use data, charts, illustrations, and logic as opposed to just theory. For example: "As you can see in the pie chart, the average person’s income with one job is..."

4. You the Speaker/Writer are Trustworthy

People want to hear or read about the speaker/writer and think you know what you are talking or writing about. For example, if you are a chef selling your recipes, you can say/write: "This dish is a crowd’s favourite. Every time I make this dish it is always left squeaky clean."

5. Urgency

Creating a sense of urgency about how this is the right moment to act is also persuasive in making people feel like they need to focus and take action fast. For example: "If we don’t get the sponsorship in a week, we may miss out on the chance to get the investment from…"

You need to be smart at choosing or knowing when to use persuasive words as to avoid people thinking you are under-minding them or have a secret motive. You need to angle it to solve their issues and not make it seem like you are taking advantage of them for your own selfish needs.

 

For example, if you are looking for sponsorships for a charity event. When you present your proposal, you need to show the budget allocation to allow your audience to see that you are being budget cautious and the money is being put to good use. You should explain and prove your research done in the cost behind each item as to show it is the most cost effective option and you have put in your negotiating efforts to lower the cost for the purpose of the event. Of course, asking for sponsorship should not be at the cost of the quality of the event hence if the cost is a bit higher than usual, you should explain why it is so and the quality of the product and purpose of it.

 

 

WHEN do you need to use persuasive words?

 

Persuasion is not a new idea, it has just become more widely known as people talk about persuasion skills and the benefits of being able to persuade others.  Great persuasive skills are vital in a wide range of workplace situations and highly valued by employers. The average person is bombarded by thousands of persuasive messages per day. From television ads, to billboards, to magazines and newspapers, we’re constantly being asked to buy products or services. Although these strategies are used on an almost constant basis, they aren’t always the most effective way to convince people to take action.

 

There are a many methods you can use that will help your skills in persuasion for when you want to convince someone to go along with your idea, or do something.
