Importance of Confidentiality With Children
Importance Of Confidentiality With Children
Trust is the core value in every relationship between two people. I trust you to be around me, to support me and to root for me. I trust you not to hurt me emotionally, mentally or physically. When I trust you, I will:
● Share my feelings with you
● Share my fears and insecurities with you
● Share my life with you
All because I trust you.
What happens when I lose a child’s trust?
1. You will not know what is happening in their life
2. You won’t be able to help them from an adult’s perspective
3. Talking and being around the child becomes hard or uncomfortable
4. The child’s self esteem and confidence can take a dip especially if they no
a. longer have the support and trust in people around them even at home
5. Built up anxiety since they won’t feel safe or comfortable.
How can I gain a child’s trust?
1. Protect the confidentiality of children. What they share with you in confidence must truly be taken care of.
2. Trust in the process. Unless it is self destructive or dangerous to others, let the child go through the natural process of healing and learning on their own time. Eventually, with your guidance, they will learn to overcome the issues at hand.
3. Hold back the urge to tell anyone else the secrets of the child, including the parents. Sometimes as parents, we can act drastically and make situations worse for the child thinking it is the right thing to do. This is a common reason why children don’t tell their parents anything later in life when they have problems. This is where Confidentiality with Children is critical. There are ways to solve and heal things in a peaceful and effective manner which both parent and child are comfortable with.
4. Don’t tell the child what to do. Instead, guide them based on your own personal experience and give them choices. Be an advisor, not a boss who delegates.
What is the benefit of having a child’s trust?
1. You can help them solve a situation in the most effective and healthy way, based on your adult experience. They will listen to your advice because you respected the Confidentiality with Children.
2. You can help mould them to learn the easy way instead of going through it the hard way and to be the best version of themselves.Coaching children is challenging and almost impossible if they don’t trust you. They need to know you want the best for them and that you will catch them if they fall.
3. Respect for you is important and can be a good and healthy example for the child to follow. A good role model is important for a child since they are very observing and pick-up easily as children.
